If it’s not plastic, what is it made from?

Unicorn Skin Cosmetic’s guilt-free glitter products are made from plant-based film (cellulose). The material is derived from the fibers of eucalyptus trees, one of the most widely available and fastest growing trees on the planet.

Most glitter is PET based, meaning it is plastic and very damaging to our environment, particularly as it can be mistaken for food and fatally ingested by marine species. Our glitter is made from a biodegradable film, which is derived from sustainable and renewable raw materials. It is certified marine & waste water compostable, meaning it is 100% safe for the environment and our oceans.

Vegan friendly – no animal testing involved in the development & production process.

The Biodegradation Process:

Heat, water and oxygen are required for effective biodegradation by micro-organisms, which are found in soil, compost or waste & marine water environments. Biodegradable plastics are metabolised by micro-organisms, which transform the bioplastic product into carbon dioxide, water and biomass. The exact timings vary depending on conditions, but this process is thought to take about 70 days.

Is it safe for the ocean?

Yes, our guilt-free glitter will fully biodegrade in both marine (ocean) and wastewater environments, in the presence of heat, water, oxygen and microorganisms. Our biodegradable glitter is also suitable for anaerobic digestion. That means that if a fish or other marine animal accidentally consumes it, the glitter will break down in the process of digestion, instead of remaining in the animal and accumulating as it is consumed up the food chain.

This is in sharp contrast to traditional plastic glitter, which can wreak havoc on marine life, since it stays in the ecosystem once disposed.

How long does it take to biodegrade?

The time it takes Unicorn Skin products to biodegrade can vary greatly (from months to a year), depending on the environmental conditions you are in. It will vary depending on different factors, like whether you’re swimming in the ocean or dancing in the desert, whether you apply it with an organic oil base or a dry brush, and how humid the climate is in your geographic location.

In general, biodegradation requires four things: heat, water, oxygen and microorganisms. The more of those four things that are present in the environment, the faster the glitter will biodegrade.

There are dozens of factors that will determine the speed of biodegradation. For example, in the ocean, currents, temperature and types of algae present will all impact the rate at which it breaks down. Generally speaking, it will degrade in the ocean faster than in the desert!

Is it safe for my face?

YES. Unicorn Skin products are made with cosmetic grade FDA approved ingredients and manufactured for quality and cleanliness standards expected for something you put on your skin.

Be a street savvy, conscious glitter buyer! Know that other face and body glitter brands may sell products containing craft glitter. It’s not a great idea to put craft glitter near your eyes.

Even cosmetic glitter can become an irritant and scratch up your corneas if it gets in your eyes, which can be painful. By using cosmetic-grade glitter you are reducing this risk, but you cannot totally eliminate it.

When applying glitter to your face, keep it above the eyebrow and along the cheekbone for the smallest risk of getting it in your eyes. If you feel something scratchy in your eyes –DON’T RUB. Use eye drops and irrigate the eye to rinse it out. If the irritation persists, go see your ophthalmologist.

How do I apply Unicorn Skin?

Apply the Unicorn Skin glitter gel directly to your skin and press glitter over the top. For broad application use your finger or a round brush. For precision, use a flat brush.

How do I remove Unicorn Skin?

Washes off with water. When removing glitter from your face, swipe out and away from your eyes.

If you have glitter stuck between your eyelashes, use a Q-tip dipped in water, oil or remover to get rid of it.

How do I store Unicorn Skin?

To maximize the shelf life of your glitter it is a good idea to keep your Unicorn Skin in a coo, dry and clean. The best way to apply it is to use a makeup brush instead of using your hands to keep the container free of bacteria that could be transferred from your skin. You can keep it for at least two years this way.

How is cosmetic glitter different from craft?

What is biodegradable glitter made from?

What is conventional glitter made from?

Plastic which can sometimes contain harsh chemicals which you don’t really want to be putting on your skin. Also if you wash this down the drain it may end up in the sea. Our glitter has been created to marine and wastewater safe standards and is vegan.

How do I apply biodegradable glitter?

There are many ways to apply biodegradable glitter. Just pop something like beeswax, coconut oil, aloe vera gel, shea butter or un-petroleum jelly on wherever you want the glitter to stick and then dab the glitter on top. For a more long-lasting look we use eyelash glue 😉 You will wake up the next day with ALL your look still in place if you do this.

Has biodegradable glitter been tested on animals?

No, our biodegradable glitter is not tested on animals and is Vegan-friendly.

Is your glitter only for us on the skin?

It is cosmetic grade so suitable for us on the face, body and hair, however, it can also be used in craft projects if you wish.

Why do you use plastic pots?

We use plastic pots at present as they are lightweight and easy for posting and are completely reusable! Once you have bought a colour, next time simply purchase a refill glitter instead and this way you are recycling your pot.

Is it as good as traditional glitter?

It is soo much better! It still has the same reflective properties as traditional glitter and is made with the same precision cutting techniques however it is good for the environment. This is premium grade cosmetic glitter and we find it actually feels very soft and is much more delicate on the skin.

How does it biodegrade?

If you leave your glitter in a warm, moist and oxygenated environment then it will begin to biodegrade, the rate depends on the mixture of these factors. Keep your EcoStardust in its pot or bag and it will last fine.
